INGREDIENTS:

  • Whole Mozzarella balls
  • Cornflakes
  • Flour
  • Dried basil
  • Dried parsley
  • Salt and pepper
  • Paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Frying oil
  • Eggs

HOW TO MAKE FRIED MOZZARELLA

  • For the mozzarella, I recommend using bocconcini (baby mozzarella balls) for ease, but low moisture mozzarella sticks work just as well. Pat the cheese dry with paper towels, then freeze for 15 minutes on a plate or chopping board.
  • As for breading, keep it simple with flour, egg, and cornflakes. I like to season the breadcrumbs with garlic powder and Italian herbs, but you can use any seasoning you prefer. Double coating the cheese ensures it’s well covered. Begin by coating the mozzarella in flour, then egg, and finally cornflakes.
  • When frying, heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Fry the breaded mozzarella until golden brown, ensuring the oil is hot enough to prevent melting. You’ll know it’s ready when the oil bubbles around the mozzarella as it’s lowered in. Enjoy your crispy mozzarella bites!

FREEZING AND MAKING AHEAD

  • While freezing isn’t my top choice, you can freeze the breaded, un-fried mozzarella in a single layer until solid, then transfer it to a freezer bag for up to 3 months. Fry from frozen until golden brown and crisp.
  • For making ahead, you can bread the mozzarella up to an hour in advance. Keep it on a wire rack in the freezer until ready to fry. This way, you can enjoy freshly fried mozzarella whenever you want with minimal prep time!
