WHAT IS FRENCH ONION SOUP

French Onion Soup is a classic French dish known for its rich, savory flavor. It’s made with caramelized onions that are simmered in beef broth (sometimes with a splash of white wine), creating a deep, umami-filled base. The soup is typically topped with a slice of toasted bread and melted cheese—usually Gruyère or Swiss—making it a hearty and comforting meal. The bread soaks up the flavorful broth, and the cheese forms a golden, gooey crust when melted, creating a delicious combination of textures and flavors. Often served as an appetizer, French Onion Soup is a beloved dish in French cuisine.

TIPS FOR MAKING THE BEST FRENCH ONION MAC AND CHEESE

1. Caramelize the Onions Slowly

  • Take your time to caramelize the onions over low to medium heat. It may take 20-30 minutes, but slow cooking will bring out their natural sweetness and deep, rich flavor. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.

2. Add Beef or Vegetable Broth for Extra Flavor

  • Incorporate a small amount of beef broth or vegetable broth into the sauce for an extra layer of flavor. It will help mimic the depth of a traditional French Onion Soup and complement the caramelized onions.

3. Use Sturdy Pasta

  • Opt for a pasta like elbow macaroni, cavatappi, or shells, which will hold the cheese sauce well. Avoid overly delicate pasta that might fall apart with the rich, creamy sauce.

4. Combine Everything Gently

  • Once your cheese sauce is ready, gently toss the pasta and caramelized onions together with the sauce to coat everything evenly. Be careful not to over-mix, as you want the creamy sauce to stay on the pasta and onions.
